The Public Record newspaper

Independent journalism is poorly funded in Romania — yet it’s critically needed. During the election years of 2024–2025, Romania faced dangerous polarization, and Russian-operated bot networks took over the internet, spreading narratives that threatened democracy, the European Union, and the rule of law.

Public Record was one of the few outlets working to debunk these networks and produce journalism that cut through the noise and shaped public opinion — especially concerning far-right candidates Călin Georgescu and George Simion. Their work relies heavily on grants.

That’s when they reached out to me to develop an idea that would raise awareness and increase public support. The concept I proposed was simple: show people what a world without free press looks like. On 9th of May, during the March for Europe in Bucharest, we handed out thousands of copies of the Public Record newspaper — with a twist. The ink distorted halfway through the pages, revealing a powerful call to action inviting readers to support their mission.

It’s safe to say the campaign was a hit. It generated significant awareness and was widely shared by influential voices on social media
